Kalonzo Steps Up as Opposition Leader Amid Odinga’s AU Bid

As Raila Odinga launches his campaign for the African Union Commission Chairperson, Kalonzo Musyoka has taken a decisive step, declaring himself the official leader of the opposition. This move comes at a critical time when Odinga’s growing alignment with President William Ruto has raised eyebrows within the Azimio Coalition.

Addressing the press, Musyoka made it clear that Azimio remains united despite the internal tensions. “I am ready to lead the opposition with a renewed vigor. We may lack numbers in Parliament, but we have the people of Kenya on our side,” Musyoka asserted.

With Odinga’s potential departure from the local political scene, Musyoka’s allies are urging him to prepare for a presidential bid in 2027. The Wiper leader has remained steadfast in his opposition to the inclusion of Odinga’s allies in Ruto’s government, viewing it as a betrayal to the younger generation, particularly those who spearheaded anti-government protests.

Musyoka’s declaration as opposition leader signifies a pivotal moment for Azimio. As he positions himself as the torchbearer for the coalition’s values, the political landscape in Kenya could be on the verge of a significant shift.

In the meantime, Odinga’s focus has shifted to continental matters, promising to push for an African Union Visa if elected, a move that aims to facilitate seamless movement across the continent.
