Dr. Waqo Dulacha Ejersa has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), succeeding Dr. Andrew Mulwa, who has served as acting CEO since March 2023.

Dr. Ejersa brings over 25 years of extensive experience in health policy and implementation to his new role. His distinguished career includes leading the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Lung Diseases division within the Ministry of Health. Dr. Ejersa holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Public Health from the University of Melbourne, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Strategic Planning from Edinburgh Business School.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ejersa has held several significant positions, including head of the Department of Non-Communicable Diseases Programmes. In this capacity, he coordinated the development of policies and strategic plans. As the head of the National Malaria Control Programme, he was instrumental in formulating national malaria strategies, securing substantial funding, and implementing effective malaria control measures.

Dr. Ejersa’s commitment to public health has earned him the Order of Grand Warrior of Kenya. He is also highly regarded for his contributions to community health, having trained and mentored numerous health professionals, thereby enhancing their skills and knowledge.

Recognized for his strong financial management, strategic planning, and governance skills, Dr. Ejersa has significantly improved accountability and efficiency in various health programmes. His efforts in malaria elimination have received both local and international acclaim, underscoring his expertise in policy-making and health strategy development.

KEMSA’s board chair, Irungu Nyakera, expressed confidence in Dr. Ejersa’s leadership, stating, “We look forward to working with Dr. Ejersa to continue providing cost-effective supply chain solutions for healthcare services across Kenya.”

Dr. Ejersa’s appointment is expected to bolster KEMSA’s capacity to procure, store, and distribute health supplies, thereby supporting Kenya’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage.
